About the Author
Dave Rosenman is a software engineer and data scientist. He holds a B.S. in Physics from The College of New Jersey and an earlier degree in Political Science from Temple University, and is working toward an M.S. in Computer Science at Georgia Tech, specializing in artificial intelligence. He is currently an Infrastructure and Operations Engineer at Optum.
He began his career in R at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, where he was the lead programmer on the 2016 New Jersey Integrated Water Quality Assessment Report, the state’s assessment of its surface waters under the Clean Water Act. He built the application, in R, that downloaded and assessed the water quality data behind the report, and is listed as its co-author. Since then his work has mostly combined SQL Server with R and Python.
He is the author of orbitr, the R package this book is built on, and of other open-source packages, among them sqlserverconnect, an R package on CRAN for connecting R to SQL Server, and polars_mssql, a Python package on PyPI for working with SQL Server data in Polars. He lives in Newtown, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Kerry.
Where to find things
- orbitr documentation: https://orbit-r.com — the package reference, the articles, and the interactive app. Start here for how any function works.
- GitHub: https://github.com/DRosenman — the package source (
orbitr), this book’s source (orbitr-book), and his other open-source work. Bug reports and pull requests for either go there. - Personal site: https://daverosenman.com — projects, writing, and contact.
If you use the book in a course, or build something with the package, he would like to hear about it.
